This quality was immediately evident in Giuseppe Verdi’s overture to La forza del destino, which opens with large brass figurations; although the brass players performed powerfully and fearlessly, they still contributed to effective dynamic contrasts afterwards; throughout the piece, they supported the rest of the orchestra (and certainly made themselves heard) but did not obliterate them. For Alvaro’s theme, the unison clarinet line—a treacherous proposition—was excellently tuned, and their sound was bright yet sensitive…”
